Batch sparging and fly sparging
Term from the Brauwerkstatt brewing glossary, category “Brewing and equipment”.
Explanation
Two ways of adding the sparge water. In fly sparging the hot water runs slowly and evenly over the grain bed while wort drains from the bottom – this gives the best efficiency but takes longer. In batch sparging you add the sparge water all at once or in two portions, stir and then drain: simpler and faster.
