Water volume calculator
How much water do you need on brew day, and how hot does it have to be? The calculator tells you step by step.
What the calculator works out
You enter how much beer you want in the fermenter, how much malt you use and how long you boil. Then come the values of your system: evaporation per hour, losses in the kettle, water under the malt pipe and the water absorbed by the grain.
From this the calculator works out the mash water, sparge water and total water. From the grain temperature and your mash-in temperature it works out how hot the mash water has to be.
For any system
The calculator suits a pot on the stove as well as all-in-one brewing systems. Typical values: around 1.4 to 1.9 quarts of mash water per pound of malt (3 to 4 L/kg), and about 0.1 gallon of water absorbed per pound of grain (0.8 to 1 L/kg).
