How much sugar goes into each bottle? The calculator tells you – to suit the style, the amount of beer and the temperature.

What the calculator works out

After fermentation some carbon dioxide is already dissolved in the beer – how much depends on the highest temperature after fermentation. The calculator takes this into account and works out how much sugar you still need for the carbonation you want.

You get the amount of sugar for the whole batch and per bottle, depending on the bottle size.

How much carbonation?

As a guide: about 1.8 to 2.3 volumes for stout, 2.0 to 2.5 volumes for ale, around 2.5 volumes for lager and 3 to 4 volumes for wheat beer. In metric units the calculator shows grams per litre.

Bottle safely

Only bottle once your hydrometer has shown the same reading for two to three days. Otherwise too much sugar ferments in the bottle and bottles can burst. Weigh the sugar carefully.
